Grizelda’s second full-length, “The Tallow Candle,” written, performed, and recorded by multi-instrumentalist Citrinitas, is a windswept vision of cold northern grandeur. Making masterful use ofdeliberately lo-fi production, Citrinitas achieves a sound that is spacious and atmospheric. Held aloft above the violent current of drums (which are real, not programmed as on the debut), guitars glisten and shimmer like sunlight through the leaves of frost-veiled forests, while the vocals, guttural and ominous, remain submerged, a voice struggling to free itself from beneath icy sheets of sound. Intermittent ethereal keyboard melodies emerge , poignant and placid, evoking a sense of solitude and meditative ambience amid the cacophonous storm of sound.
