'ANUBI is undoubtedly one of the most radiant and important names in the history of Lithuanian music. Although the band released only one full-length album, its music left a profound mark and continues to be an inexhaustible source of inspiration for creators and listeners of extreme music in Lithuania and beyond. The reasons behind this unique phenomenon are manifold – the band’s mystical aura was shaped not only by the essence of ANUBI’s sound but also by the magnetic personality of its visionary leader, Martynas Meškauskas, known also as Lord Ominous.

Martynas Meškauskas was a Lithuanian graphic artist, painter, and composer. Both in his visual art and in his music, Martynas often explored dark, ritualistic atmospheres – death as transformation and inner illumination were central themes to his work. Today, his artistic legacy stands as an authentic monument of Lithuanian art, still resonating deeply more than two decades after his tragic passing. Meškauskas’ life ended suddenly and unexpectedly on March 30, 2002, when, at the age of only twenty-eight, he drowned while fishing on a lake in Michigan, USA – a loss that deeply shook Lithuania’s art and music community.

Just a few years before the tragic death of ANUBI’s frontman, the band released its first and only full-length album, Kai pilnaties akis užmerks mirtis (“When the Eye of the Full Moon Shuts Death”). Recorded in 1996 and released in 1998 by the Italian label Danza Ipnotica Records, this is a deeply
conceptual work about Death – an abyss of sound where the aesthetics of mortality and the scream of existence merge into one. In this album, Martynas masterfully fused his visual and musical expression: he not only composed the music and wrote the lyrics but also painted the cover artwork and designed the layout of the booklet.

ANUBI’s music breathes within the black metal tradition, yet it boldly and unapologetically breaks every convention of the genre. What stands out most in this record is the band’s daring use of instruments then considered alien to black metal – saxophone, accordion, and keyboards – establishing ANUBI as true pioneers of visionary avant-garde black metal. Lord Ominous’ vocal performance is outstanding – lyrical, at times grandly operatic, and at others a chilling grimace of Death itself, echoing like a heart-piercing monologue from a dark theatre. The album feels like a ritual – a sonic invocation inviting the listener to confront their own shadow. It is an act of self- analysis through the prism of life and death, yet here Death is not merely an end, but an intimate transition into another state of being – a secret locked within the alchemy of transformation.

Critics of both the bleak 1990s and the present day agree – this album is truly one of a kind. Its creative singularity and emotional depth remain unmatched. For more than two decades, ANUBI’s followers have revered this work and dreamed of the day when this priceless diamond of dark art would once again be heard in its purest form – on vinyl. That moment has finally arrived: with the consent of the original musicians, Inferna Profundus Records proudly reissues “Kai pilnaties akis užmerks mirtis” on LP.
